Book Review: First Time in Forever, by Sarah Morgan

Happily-Ever-After isn’t on Emily Donovan’s agenda…

first time in forever

Emily’s been too swept up in a challenging year of firsts, from becoming a stand-in mum to her niece Lizzy to moving to remote but beautiful Puffin Island, to think about love.

But that’s before charismatic local yacht club owner Ryan Cooper kisses her…

Ryan knows Emily has a complicated past that she’s struggling to face. So he makes it his mission to help her unwind and enjoy the chemistry they share.

Can the welcoming community of Puffin Island work their magic on Emily and get her to take her biggest leap of trust yet —putting her heart in someone else’s hands?

Let bestselling author Sarah Morgan whisk you away with the all new Puffin Island series!

***

I’ve only read one Sarah Morgan book before, which was Maybe This Christmas last year, but I had absolutely loved it, so when I was so excited when I saw this available on NetGalley, shouting out to me with its beautifully colourful and summery cover. Big thanks to Mills & Boon for providing me with a copy!

Emily Donovan has spent her entire life buildings walls and barriers around herself, to protect her from ever being able to be hurt. She’s switched herself off emotionally, and doesn’t intend to change that. However, when her superstar sister is killed in an accident, the six-year-old niece that she’s never even met becomes an orphan, and is left in Emily’s care. Emily finds herself at risk of everything that frightens her. To protect Lizzy, she takes her to the safest, most remote place she knows: Puffin Island. While it seems like a perfect plan at first, Emily is trapped by all her worst nightmares, and has to learn how to face her fears.

Ryan Cooper has had enough emotional baggage for  a lifetime, and is now happily living his life by his own rules: no one else to worry about, no one else to have to prioritise, free to do as he pleases. This is exactly what he wants after a life with far too much responsibility.

However, from the moment Emily opens the door to Ryan at Castaway Cottage, it’s clear that both their beliefs are going to be put to the test. HELLO, CHEMISTRY. What unfurls is a wonderful story where both sides battle between their feelings and the life they thought they wanted. The chemistry between these two is on fire, and Sarah is a queen of steamy romances. What I love most is that while this book is certainly steamy, every scene between the couple is still tender and heartfelt. A* in chemistry for Ms. Morgan. Ryan, FYI, is a dream. I love him.

I fell head over heels in love with Lizzy too. This poor, darling girl, who also hasn’t lived the life she deserves thus far. A girl who just wants love, and to play and be cared for – as every six-year-old should be able to. She absolutely melted my heart.

I can’t finish this off without saying what an amazing job Sarah has done of creating the setting of Puffin Island. There was a sensory overload as I found myself adamant I could smell the salty air and hear the crashing of waves on the shore. Puffin Island and its amazing community of instantly loveable characters is utterly charming, and I cannot wait to read the next book in the trilogy.
